An Introduction
A Pioneering European Innitiative in International Doctoral Research & Training
Launched in 2010 with the support of the European Commission's Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate Programme, the GEM PhD School on "Globalisation, the EU, and Multilateralism" is a five year programme aimed at fostering first-rate interdisciplinary doctoral research in Europe on common policy and societal challenges facing the current global system.
The GEM PhD School brings together a consortium of institutions, which have taken the lead in International Relations, Comparative Politics, European Integration Studies, Comparative Regional Cooperation Studies (ex. Mercosur, Asean, NAFTA, etc...) and Inter-regional Research (ex. ASEM, Rio process, EU-AU, ...etc).
The GEM PhD School's core objective is to offer a select group of top doctoral students from across the globe the means to accomplish their doctoral research and training in a quality driven and thoroughly internationalized environment.
The GEM PhD School provides:
- 3 structuring Jointly Executed Research Projects (JERPs)
- An innovative set of Integrated Learning Tools
- Sponsored International Mobility
- International Seminars and Joint Workshops
- Generous Financial Assistance provided by such funding instances at the European Commission
- A stable framework wherein to accomplish PhD projects leading up to a double degree involving at least 2 partner institutions
The GEM PhD School's programme is thus pioneering an integrated approach to doctoral teaching reflected in its joint tutorship and double doctorates. All its constituent activities are thus geared towards:
- Providing a set of top quality and multidisciplinary doctoral courses allowing for truly pluralistic and comparative approaches to "Globalisation, the EU and Multilateralism".
- Fuelling existing European Integration Research, and strengthening the specific achievements accomplished within an ever stronger European Research Area
- Guaranteeing continued excellence in education in a field of strategic importance
- Enhancing the profile and visibility of the European Union in the fields of International Relations, Social Sciences, and Humanities whilst highlighting the findings born from the vast and unique efforts deployed in the field of EU studies by European Higher Education Institutions
